Some changes will happen to Amazon China

On May 24, there were media reports that Amazon China announced that it would suspend the official Chinese website of Amazon and suspend the service of the platform to sellers from July 17. Subsequently, Amazon China issued a statement stating that the discontinuation of the Amazon Appstore service will not affect any current Amazon business operations in China, including Amazon’s overseas purchases, Amazon’s global store openings, and Amazon’s official website in China. The deactivation of the Amazon Appstore has no impact on Amazon shopping. Last year, Amazon announced that its Kindle e-bookstore would stop operating in China. According to the notice, Amazon will stop the operation of the Kindle e-bookstore in China on June 30 this year. As of the close of U.S. stocks on Tuesday, AMZN closed at $114.99, a slight drop of 0.02%, with a total market value of $1.180 trillion.

Amazon denies the Chinese official website is about to shut down

On May 24, Amazon China issued a statement stating that the Amazon App Store is an application store for users to download games and mobile applications for Android devices. The discontinuation of the Amazon Appstore service will not affect any of Amazon’s current business operations in China, including Amazon’s overseas purchases, Amazon’s global store openings, and Amazon’s official website in China, Amazon.cn. Chinese consumers can continue to download the Amazon Shopping app through their mobile phones and enjoy Amazon’s massive selection of high-quality products and convenient shopping experiences at preferential prices. The deactivation of the Amazon Appstore has no impact on Amazon shopping. On May 23, the Amazon App Store sent an email reminder that starting from July 17, Amazon China will no longer provide App Store services. According to public information, Amazon Appstore is an application store launched by Amazon, which mainly provides content downloads such as applications and games.

Amazon Kindle is to be discontinued on June 30

On June 2 last year, the Amazon Kindle official account issued an important notice on the adjustment of the operation of the Kindle e-bookstore in China. According to the notice, Amazon will stop operating the Kindle e-bookstore in China on June 30, 2023, one year later. After this time, people will not be able to purchase new eBooks. For eBooks already purchased, you have until June 30, 2024, to download and continue reading thereafter.

Amazon China said its long-term commitment to customers will not change. The details of the specific adjustments are as follows: from the launch of the first generation of Kindle by Amazon in 2007 to the current series of products such as Paperwhite and Oasis, Kindle has gone through more than ten years. In February 2012, the Amazon China website officially launched the Kindle store, and Kindle users can directly purchase Chinese Kindle books. In June 2013, Kindle officially entered the Chinese market. By 2016, China had become the world’s largest market for Kindle. Kindle has accompanied the youth of many people. In March 2019, Amazon’s official account launched an advertisement, a Kindle was covered on a box of instant noodles, and the text next to it said “Cover the Kindle, the noodles are more delicious”, and even set it with the built-in clock function of the Kindle. This wave of marketing caused a sensation at the time.

After the U.S. stock market closed on April 28, Amazon announced its first-quarter earnings. In the three months ended March 31, Amazon’s net profit was $3.17 billion, compared with a loss of $3.84 billion in the same period last year. Total sales revenue for the quarter increased by 9% over the same period last year to $127.4 billion. However, the growth rate of 9% is still in the single digits, which is the weakest year of expansion since it became a listed company 25 years ago.
