Over 60% of shipping companies will use ChatGPT
ChatGPT has been very popular around the world this year, arousing widespread discussion and use. ChatGPT will be applied in various fields in the future. Many industries will be affected, and shipping is no exception. In the shipping industry, ChatGPT will be mainly used in the field of data analysis, involving international trade regulations, insurance compliance decision support, and communication aspects such as customer service and marketing. ChatGPT, a large-scale conversational language model released by the artificial intelligence laboratory OpenAI, has been on the hot search list recently. Since its release at the end of 2022, ChatGPT has also received continuous attention from the shipping industry.
In this context, the China Shipping Prosperity Index Compilation Office of the Shanghai International Shipping Research Center conducted a related survey on whether shipping companies will accept ChatGPT and their intentions to use it in priority areas. The survey results show that more than 60% of the shipping companies said that they will introduce ChatGPT technology in their business, and will mainly use it in the field of data analysis, related to international trade regulations, insurance support, customer service, marketing, and other communications.

In the future, with the continuous breakthrough of new technologies, ChatGPT technology may bring more innovations to the shipping industry. Among the shipping companies surveyed, 62.5% said they would introduce ChatGPT, and another 26.25% said they were not interested in ChatGPT and did not plan to introduce it. 28.75% of the companies said that they would give priority to investing in data analysis. 16.25% of the companies said that they would give priority to investing in regulations and insurance compliance decision support related to international trade. 12.5% of the companies said that they would give priority to investing in customers’ services, marketing, and other communication aspects.
Among the container shipping companies surveyed, 63.15% said they would introduce ChatGPT, and another 26.32% said they were not interested in ChatGPT and did not intend to introduce it. 26.32% of the companies said that they would give priority to investing in communication such as customer service and marketing. 15.79% of the companies said that they would give priority to investing in data analysis. 15.79% of the companies said that they would give priority to investing in automation processes. 10.53% of enterprises indicated that they would give priority to investing in regulations and insurance compliance decision support related to international trade. Among the dry bulk shipping companies surveyed, 60.87% said they would introduce ChatGPT, and 26.09% of the shipping companies said they were not interested in ChatGPT and did not plan to introduce this technology. 30.43% of enterprises indicated that they would give priority to investing in data analysis. 17.39% of enterprises indicated that they would give priority to investing in regulations and insurance compliance decision support involving international trade.

In addition, among the port companies surveyed, 40.74% said they would use ChatGPT, and another 40.74% said they were not interested in ChatGPT and did not intend to introduce it. 18.52% of the companies said that they would give priority to investing in data analysis. 14.81% of the companies said that they would give priority to investing in communication such as customer service and marketing. In the future, there will be many new technologies in the development of science and technology, and enterprises and markets should keep pace with the times. This is also a necessary condition for the continuous development and progress of the industry. Every business should be prepared to meet the changing technological development.
